Check when Upwork earnings become available

Before money reaches your available balance, it moves through a few stages.

• Connects and service fees: Proposal costs and Upwork's contract service fee are separate from withdrawal fees. Start your comparison with the available balance after these charges.

• Escrow and approval: For fixed price contracts, the client funds a milestone into escrow before you start. Upwork's milestone guidance gives the client up to 14 days to review, after which the payment moves to a five-day security hold.

• Hourly billing: Upwork's hourly guidance bills your tracked hours on the Monday after the work week, gives clients until Friday to review, and releases earnings the following Wednesday.

You can withdraw once funds are available, your tax information is complete, and the payment method is active.

Withdrawal methods Upwork supports for Sri Lankan freelancers

Your withdrawal settings show the methods available to your account. These are the main bank and wallet routes to compare.

• Direct to Local Bank: Upwork's Direct to Local Bank guidance lists a $0.99 withdrawal fee, delivery within four business days, and a minimum of $5 or higher depending on your location. Sri Lanka appears in its country table with a $13,000 limit. That table gives a country and a figure only, so the period the limit covers is not published. Check the limit shown on your own withdrawal screen.

• Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH): Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank guidance lists a $2.99 fee for freelancers with a non-US tax address, effective September 1, 2026, and delivery in two to five business days. The method remains free for a US tax address.

This is the method you use with a USD account like Elevate Pay.

• USD wire transfer: Upwork's wire guidance lists a $50 fee per wire and says transfers may take up to seven business days, with possible intermediary and receiving-bank charges.

• PayPal and Payoneer: Upwork describes a small per-transfer fee without publishing a fixed amount, so use the charge shown on your withdrawal screen. PayPal payouts are usually processed right away but can take up to 24 hours. Payoneer payouts typically arrive within 24 hours.

Allow three days for a new method: Upwork activates a newly added withdrawal method after three days, so set yours up before you need the money.

Step by step: Direct to Local Bank

Step 1: Add your bank account

Open Account settings on desktop, or Settings in the app, then Withdrawals. Under Withdrawal methods, select Add a method and Direct to Local Bank. Select Sri Lanka and enter your bank account details.

Step 2: Check your name carefully

Use the account holder name that matches your real, verified name on Upwork. If the names differ, contact Upwork support before withdrawing.

Step 3: Wait for activation

For security reasons, a new withdrawal method becomes active after three days. Plan ahead if you need money soon.

Step 4: Withdraw

Once the method is active and your funds are available, select it in Withdrawals, enter the amount and submit. Upwork applies a noon UTC cutoff for same-day processing and says withdrawals should arrive within four business days. If the payment is late, contact your bank. Upwork can trace it after eight business days.

Step by step: withdrawing via Elevate Pay

This route keeps your money in USD, so you decide when and at what rate to convert.

Step 1: Open a free Elevate Pay account

Apply through the Elevate Pay app and complete verification. The Sri Lanka account-opening guide explains the identity and address documents.

Step 2: Copy your account details

In the Elevate Pay app, open your account details and copy your account number, ACH routing number and account holder name.

Step 3: Add Direct to U.S. Bank on Upwork

Follow Upwork's US-bank setup instructions: open Account settings on desktop or Settings in the app, then Withdrawals. Under Withdrawal methods, select Add a method, then Set up next to Direct to U.S. Bank. Enter your Elevate Pay details and choose your payment schedule.

Step 4: Wait for activation and withdraw

After the three-day activation period, withdraw your available funds. Upwork gives an ACH delivery window of two to five business days. Receiving ACH is free.

Step 5: Send rupees when you need them

In Elevate Pay, choose your Sri Lankan bank from the available destinations. LKR transfers cost a flat $1.50 fee. The maximum is $5,000 per transfer, so a larger amount goes as more than one transfer. Review the recipient details and final LKR amount, then send.

Remember the 180-day rule. Sri Lanka's export proceeds Rules require service proceeds to reach Sri Lanka within 180 days of providing the service, so do not leave earnings sitting abroad indefinitely.

Common Upwork withdrawal problems and how to fix them

• Delayed clearing: If your balance shows as pending, it is still in the security period. Check the expected release date in your transaction history. Withdrawing cannot happen until funds move to your available balance.

• Name mismatch: If your bank or provider rejects a payment, compare the account holder name with your verified Upwork name character by character. Contact Upwork support if your withdrawal method was flagged.

• You hit the country limit: Upwork lists a $13,000 limit for Sri Lanka but does not publish whether it applies per withdrawal, per day or per month. Check the figure on your withdrawal screen before splitting a large balance, and ask Upwork support to confirm the period. Each withdrawal carries its own $0.99 fee.

• Currency conversion: Direct to Local Bank converts your earnings to rupees. Compare its final LKR amount with receiving USD through ACH and converting later, using the same starting balance and time.

• Wrong bank details: Check the account number and ACH routing number against the details in the app. Contact Upwork support for a rejected payout method, or our support team in the app for help with an incoming transfer.

What is the cheapest way to withdraw from Upwork in Sri Lanka?

Direct to Local Bank has the lowest listed Upwork withdrawal fee at $0.99. A USD account is worth comparing for larger payments, because the conversion happens when you choose rather than at withdrawal. Compare the final rupees for your amount. Each additional Upwork withdrawal still has its own fee.

Do I need a US address to use Direct to U.S. Bank?

Use a US account in your own name and keep your actual country and tax address on Upwork. Do not enter a US residential address to bypass fees or verification. A US receiving account does not change your residency.

Can I withdraw Upwork earnings into a mobile wallet?
