Starting September 1, 2026, Upwork charges $2.99 for ACH withdrawals to a US bank if your tax address is outside the US, $0.99 for Direct to Local Bank, $50 for wire transfers, and $2 for Instant Pay. The ACH fee is new. Before then, that method was free for everyone.
These are the visible fees. Currency conversion can add a separate cost when your dollars are converted. This guide covers both.

These fees apply after Upwork's freelancer service fee, now variable from 0 to 15% per contract, has been deducted from your earnings.
Upwork ACH fees: what changed in September 2026
ACH appears in Upwork's withdrawal menu as Direct to U.S. Bank. It sends earnings to any US checking or savings account over the Automated Clearing House network. For years, it was Upwork's only fully free withdrawal method, which made it a common choice for international freelancers with USD accounts.
Since September 1, 2026, ACH withdrawals cost $2.99 each if your tax address is outside the US. US-based freelancers still withdraw free. Timing is unchanged at 2 to 5 business days. For more detail on who pays the fee and how to get it reimbursed, see Upwork's New $2.99 Direct to U.S. Bank Fee, Explained.
With ACH, your withdrawal remains in USD. No conversion happens unless you choose to convert.
The fee you can't see: exchange rate markups
Upwork confirms in its own documentation that its payment partners set the exchange rate for local currency withdrawals. The rate can differ from the mid-market rate and may include a markup.
What that means on a $1,000 withdrawal:
Method | Visible fee | Estimated FX cost | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|
Direct to Local Bank | $0.99 | About $15 at a 1.5% markup | About $16 |
Direct to U.S. Bank (non-US) | $2.99 | $0. Stays in USD | $2.99 |
Wire transfer | $50.00 | $0 in USD, plus possible intermediary fees | $50 or more |
PayPal | About $2.00 | About $30-40 at a 3-4% markup | About $32-42 |
Payoneer | About $2.00 | About $5-20 at 0.5-2% | About $7-22 |
The FX markups are third-party estimates. Upwork does not publish its providers' rates. Before confirming a local currency withdrawal, compare the quoted rate with the mid-market rate.
As the withdrawal amount increases, percentage-based FX costs increase while flat fees stay fixed. Based on these estimates, a $0.99 fee with a 1-2% markup is cheaper only for withdrawals under roughly $150-200.
The cheapest way to withdraw from Upwork
The cheapest method depends on your tax address, withdrawal amount, and whether you need to convert the funds.
If you have a US tax address, use Direct to U.S. Bank. It is free.
For everyone else, as of September 2026:
1. ACH to your own USD account if you want to keep your earnings in USD. The fee is $2.99, and the full amount arrives in USD. You control when and where to convert. An Elevate Pay account is FDIC insured up to $250K through Merchants Commercial Bank. The $2.99 comes back in any month when you receive $500 or more from Upwork, and multiple withdrawals can combine to reach $500.
2. Direct to Local Bank for small, infrequent withdrawals. Based on the estimates above, the $0.99 flat fee can cost less overall under roughly $150, depending on the conversion rate.
3. Wire transfers when ACH is not an option. The $50 fee and possible intermediary fees make wires expensive for smaller withdrawals.
4. Check the full cost before using PayPal. Review both the visible $2 fee and the quoted conversion rate.
