Freelancers in Pakistan pay an Upwork service fee of 0 to 15% on every contract. They then pay a withdrawal fee: $0.99 for Direct to Local Bank in rupees, or $2.99 for ACH to a US bank account, a fee that is new as of September 1, 2026. A third cost can apply when dollars are converted to rupees. On typical withdrawals, the estimated FX cost can exceed the visible withdrawal fee.
This guide breaks down each cost with worked examples.
Fee 1: Upwork's service fee, 0 to 15%
Before you withdraw, Upwork deducts its service fee. The fee is variable per contract, anywhere from 0 to 15%, and it locks in when you send your proposal or accept an offer. You can see the exact percentage before accepting a job. For more detail, see Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee in 2026.
On a $1,000 contract at a 10% fee, $900 reaches your Upwork balance. The examples below start from that number.
Fee 2: withdrawal fees from Pakistan
These are the main options in the draft, verified September 2026:
Method | Upwork's fee | What arrives | Timing | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Direct to Local Bank (PKR) | $0.99 | Rupees, converted at the provider's rate | About 4 business days | Min $5, max $8,999 per withdrawal |
Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) | $2.99 since Sep 1, 2026 | Full USD to your US account | 2-5 business days | Account must accept ACH |
Payoneer | About $2.00 | USD to Payoneer, then their fees to withdraw | 1-3 days | Payoneer's own limits |
Wire transfer | $50.00 | USD, minus intermediary bank fees | 3-7 days | None listed |

Until this month, Direct to U.S. Bank was free. Many Pakistani freelancers use it to move Upwork earnings into a USD account. The new $2.99 fee changes the visible withdrawal cost, but the exchange rate remains important when comparing methods.
Fee 3: the exchange rate
When you withdraw in PKR, the rate is set by Upwork's banking providers and it is not the mid-market rate. Upwork's documentation says its payment partners set the rate and may include a markup. Independent estimates put typical markups around 1 to 2%.
Here is what that does to a $900 withdrawal, which is your $1,000 contract after a 10% service fee:
Route | Visible fees | Estimated FX cost | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
Direct to Local Bank | $0.99 | About $13.50 at 1.5% | About $885 in PKR |
ACH to a USD account, convert on your terms | $2.99 | Depends on your provider's rate | Up to $897.01 |
Payoneer to local bank | About $2.00 | About $4.50-18 at 0.5-2% | About $880-893 |
The markups are estimates. Upwork does not publish its providers' rates. Before confirming a withdrawal, compare the quoted rate with a current USD-to-PKR mid-market benchmark.
Based on the estimates above, Direct to Local Bank can cost more than its $0.99 fee suggests, especially on larger withdrawals. Receiving the payout in USD first lets you choose when and where to convert it.
The cheapest route in 2026
The cheapest route depends on the exchange rate and provider fees you receive. Elevate Pay gives freelancers in Pakistan a USD account with US ACH details that work directly with Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal. Deposits are FDIC insured up to $250K through Merchants Commercial Bank.
Two features can reduce the total cost.
First, the $2.99 comes back. In any month when you receive $500 or more from Upwork into Elevate Pay, across any number of withdrawals, Elevate Pay credits the fee back. Multiple withdrawals can combine to reach $500. Full terms are on the Upwork Reward Campaign page.
Second, you can keep the payout in USD and choose when and where to convert to PKR.
Withdrawing from Upwork in Pakistan, step by step
1. Open the Get Paid page and add a withdrawal method.
2. For a local bank, choose Direct to Local Bank and enter your IBAN. The name must exactly match your verified Upwork name.
3. For USD over ACH, choose Direct to U.S. Bank and enter your Elevate Pay account and routing numbers, found in the app under account details.
4. Set a schedule or withdraw manually. Local bank transfers have a 12:00 UTC cutoff for same-day processing.
5. Local bank arrives in about 4 business days. ACH arrives in 2-5 business days.
