This guide explains the permissions involved, how to connect an AI assistant to IBKR, what you can ask it to do, and how to troubleshoot common setup problems. We tested the flow using Claude and generated a portfolio dashboard from live account data within seconds.
What Can ChatGPT or Claude Access in IBKR?
Before you connect, it helps to know what you are turning on. The IBKR AI connection gives the AI two kinds of access:
Read access
The AI can see your portfolio, positions, balances, performance, and trade history, and answer questions about them.
Draft-order access
You can ask the AI to prepare buy or sell orders. These are called Instructions, and they are not live orders. Nothing reaches the market until you open IBKR yourself, review the order, and submit it.
Our Test With Claude and IBKR

How to Connect ChatGPT or Claude to Interactive Brokers
Step 1: Open Your AI Tool
Open a supported AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Grok. Availability may vary by provider and account.
Step 2: Find Interactive Brokers in the Connector Marketplace
Go to the connector or app marketplace inside your AI tool and search for Interactive Brokers. Select it to begin connecting.
Step 3: Review and Approve the Connection
You will be taken to an IBKR consent screen that explains exactly what you are agreeing to. This is the most important screen, so read it carefully.
Here you will see the AI service requesting two permissions: the ability to read your account information, and the ability to write account information, which simply means drafting orders for your review. Reading the agreement, a few things are worth noting:
IBKR shares only your portfolio and trading data, and only when the AI asks for it. It does not share personal details like your name, username, account number, address, government ID, employment, or income information.
You can disconnect the AI at any time from your IBKR account settings.

Step 4: Log In With Your IBKR Credentials
Sign in with your IBKR username and password to authorize the connection. Your login is handled by IBKR, not stored by the AI provider.
Step 5: Start Asking Questions
Setup is done. From here you can ask things like:
"How is my portfolio doing this month?"
"What percentage of my money is in my top 3 positions?"
"Find me low-cost ETFs that track the S&P 500."
"Draft a sell order for half of my Apple position." (You will review and submit it yourself.)
The connection does not require an API key or a separate IBKR account. Access may depend on your AI plan, IBKR account, and available market-data permissions.
Permissions, Privacy and Account Control
The connection is convenient, but it is worth understanding the trade-offs:
Your data leaves IBKR
Once the AI provider receives your portfolio data, it is handled under that provider's terms, privacy policy, and account settings. Review them before connecting.
AI can be wrong
Even with correct data, an AI can misread a number or give an outdated answer. Always double-check before acting.
You are always in control
The AI cannot move money, cannot trade on its own, and cannot touch anything outside your IBKR account. Every order runs through your approval on IBKR.
Troubleshooting the IBKR AI Connection
Connection option not appearing
Confirm that the AI tool and IBKR account are eligible for the connector and that you are using the latest available version. Search the connector or app marketplace for Interactive Brokers rather than IBKR.
Account data not loading
Disconnect and reconnect the integration, confirm the consent screen was approved, and ask the assistant to refresh the account data. Temporary market-data or service availability can also affect the response.
Permission denied
Return to the IBKR authorization screen and confirm the requested read and draft-order permissions. Your IBKR account may require an additional login or security check.
Draft order unavailable
The assistant can only prepare supported draft Instructions. The feature may not be available for every security, account type, order type, or market.
Portfolio values look different
Check the currency, price timestamp, market-data availability, and whether the assistant is showing unrealized performance, total account value, or a specific time range.
