The PayPal question
PayPal is fast, but the visible fee does not show the full cost. PayPal converts your dollars to pesos at its own rate, and independent estimates put that markup around 3 to 4%. On a $900 withdrawal, that is roughly $27 to $36, ten times the visible fee. The speed comes with a higher estimated conversion cost.
The same applies to Direct to Local Bank: $0.99 up front, followed by a conversion at a rate Upwork's banking providers set, which is not the mid-market rate. Independent estimates put that markup around 1 to 2%.
Any option that pays out in pesos sets the exchange rate before the funds reach you. Receiving full USD first lets you choose when to convert.
