Starting September 1, 2026, Upwork charges freelancers in Bangladesh with a non-US tax address $2.99 for each Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal. Upwork also deducts a variable service fee of 0 to 15% per contract, while Direct to Local Bank costs $0.99. Currency conversion adds another cost when dollars become taka. Bangladesh's 2.5% cash incentive on remittances sent through official banking channels may offset part of the total for qualifying transfers.
The sections below show how each cost affects what you receive.
Fee 1: Upwork's service fee, 0 to 15%
Upwork deducts its service fee before you withdraw. The fee is variable per contract, anywhere from 0 to 15%, and locks in when you send a proposal or accept an offer. You see the exact percentage before accepting a job. See Upwork's Freelancer Service Fee in 2026 for the full breakdown.
On a $1,000 contract at a 10% fee, $900 reaches your Upwork balance. Everything below starts from that number.
Fee 2: withdrawal fees from Bangladesh
The main withdrawal options are:
Method | Upwork's fee | What arrives | Timing | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Direct to Local Bank (BDT) | $0.99 | Taka, converted at the provider's rate | About 4 business days | Min $5, max $10,000 per withdrawal |
Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) | $2.99 since Sep 1, 2026 | Full USD to your US account | 2-5 business days | Account must accept ACH |
Payoneer | About $2.00 | USD to Payoneer, then their fees to withdraw | 1-3 days | Payoneer's own limits |
Wire transfer | $50.00 | USD, minus intermediary bank fees | 3-7 days | None listed |

PayPal does not operate in Bangladesh, so it is not an option. Payoneer withdrawals can be cashed out through local channels, including bKash. Direct to U.S. Bank was free until September 1, 2026. The new $2.99 fee changes the visible cost, but the exchange rate can have a larger effect on the final payout.
Fee 3: the exchange rate
When you withdraw in BDT, the rate is set by Upwork's banking providers and it is not the mid-market rate. The markup figures in this article are independent estimates, typically around 1 to 2%. On a $900 withdrawal, a 1.5% markup costs about $13.50, more than every visible fee combined. Receiving the full amount in USD first lets you choose when to convert instead of accepting the rate applied at withdrawal.
The 2.5% remittance incentive
Bangladesh pays a 2.5% government cash incentive on wage earners' remittances that arrive through official banking channels. For qualifying remittances, the incentive can offset part of the costs above. Eligibility and classification depend on Bangladesh Bank's rules and your receiving bank, so confirm how your transfer will be treated.
The cheapest route in 2026
Elevate Pay gives freelancers in Bangladesh a USD account with US ACH details that work directly with Upwork's Direct to U.S. Bank withdrawal. Deposits are FDIC insured up to $250K through Merchants Commercial Bank.
Elevate Pay credits the $2.99 fee back in any month when you receive $500 or more from Upwork, and multiple withdrawals can combine to reach $500. Full terms are on the Upwork Reward Campaign page. You can then convert to taka on your terms instead of accepting the rate applied at withdrawal.
