If you're a freelancer in Pakistan earning from abroad, getting your PRC right is one of the most important steps you can take for your taxes. Not just any PRC though. The SBP code on that certificate determines your tax rate, your PSEB eligibility, and your standing with the FBR. For IT and freelance service exporters, that code needs to be 9186.
For Elevate Pay users looking to get their finances properly set up in Pakistan, the Bank Alfalah Freelancer Digital Current Account is the recommended choice. It takes about 10 minutes to open online, and you never need to visit a branch.
In this guide, we'll cover what the account offers, what to watch out for when applying, and exactly how to open it.
Why Code 9186 Matters for Your Taxes
When you bring international earnings into Pakistan through a banking channel, your bank issues a PRC to confirm the funds arrived through an approved route. The SBP code on that PRC tells the FBR and PSEB what type of services you were exporting.
For IT and IT-enabled service (ITeS) exporters, which covers most freelancers, 9186 is the correct SBP export code. Having this code on your PRC makes you eligible for:
A final withholding tax of just 0.25% for PSEB-registered freelancers
A standard 1% final tax if you're not PSEB-registered
PSEB registration and annual renewal
Proper FBR compliance as a foreign income earner
A PRC with the wrong code can complicate your tax filing, put your PSEB status at risk, and cost you more in taxes. It's a small detail with a big impact on what you actually take home.

Alfa App access
Manage everything through the Bank Alfalah Alfa App: transfers, account details, and transaction history.
Correct tax rates applied automatically

Important: Make Sure You Open the Right Account
Before you apply, there's one thing to keep in mind. Do not open an Asaan account.
Bank Alfalah has several digital account types and it's easy to end up on the wrong one. The Freelancer Digital Current Account is the right fit for your needs as a remote worker or freelancer.

How to Open the Account in 10 Minutes
The entire process is digital through Bank Alfalah's RAPID portal. Here's how it works.
Step 1: Start Your Application
Head to the link above and click "Open Now" or "Apply Now". Fill in your basic details: name, CNIC, and contact information. When prompted, select both the PKR account and the USD ESFCA.
Step 2: Upload Your Documents
You'll need to upload:
Your CNIC
Your signature on a plain white piece of paper (this counts as proof of income for freelancer accounts)
Freelancer accounts do not require formal proof of income. No payslips, no contracts, no bank statements needed.
Step 3: Wait for Activation
Once you submit, Bank Alfalah reviews and processes your application. You'll get a confirmation when your account is active. Nothing required from your side during this step.
Step 4: Complete Biometric Verification
This is mandatory before your account is fully functional. You can do it in three ways:
Via the Alfa App: the easiest option, done straight from your phone
At any Bank Alfalah ATM: insert your CNIC and follow the steps
At any Bank Alfalah branch: walk in if you prefer
Most people get this done through the app or an ATM in a few minutes.
Once biometric verification is complete, your account is live and ready to go.
Receiving Funds and Getting Your 9186 PRC
With your account open, here's how to get your PRC through Elevate Pay.
Open the Elevate Pay app and use the salary transfer flow to send money to Pakistan. Add your Bank Alfalah PKR account as the destination. This is the specific flow that triggers the correct 9186 PRC code on the Bank Alfalah side.
Once the transfer comes through, email Bank Alfalah at prc@bankalfalah.com to request your PRC for that transaction. They'll issue it once the transfer has been processed.
A tax of 1% will be automatically deducted on your export proceeds. To reduce this to 0.25%, you need to be registered with PSEB. Once you have your PSEB certificate, contact your Bank Alfalah branch directly or email contactus@bankalfalah.com with your certificate, and they will loop in your branch to update your tax rate.
Save every PRC you receive. These certificates are your proof of compliance and what you'll need for PSEB registration, FBR filing, and your tax returns.
Wrapping Up
If you're using Elevate Pay to receive your international earnings, opening a Bank Alfalah Freelancer Digital Current Account is the step that brings everything together on the tax compliance side. You get dual PKR and USD accounts, no minimum balance, and the whole thing takes about 10 minutes to set up.
Just make sure you're applying for the Freelancer Digital Current Account and not the Asaan account. Complete your biometric verification, set up your salary transfer on Elevate Pay, and email prc@bankalfalah.com when you need your certificate.
